BE THE INSPIRATION: President's Corner

Aug. 11: Flexibility Drives Engagement

I love going to luncheon on Wednesday.  Everyone is upbeat, glad to be part of an organization that is truly a force of good in the world.  Friendship and fellowship surround us.

With such a terrific weekly ritual, it is easy to conclude that “Wednesdays at 12:15” is our lifeblood.  And, not too long ago attendance at regular meetings was a requirement.

Things change. The 2016 Rotary International Council on Legislations gave individual clubs leeway to vary meeting times, allow for online meetings and modify schedules as long as the Club meets at least twice monthly.  In our own Club, we have a tradition of counting committee meetings and service projects towards monthly attendance goals - meaning that there are a number of ways to reach “perfect attendance” of four times each month.

Donut Day at the Farmer’s Market reminded me why this matters.  We had an impressive showing of volunteers under Rick Hibbert’s leadership - including some who might be finding that life is interfering and keeping them from Wednesday luncheons.  That’s OKAY! We are proud of all our members and grateful for their service - whenever that might be.

Similarly, some have stepped up to lead teams even though they also struggle to commit to weekly luncheon.  Again, that’s OKAY! Wonderful, even. The new face of Rotary is one that adapts to member needs and the crazy busy world we all have to navigate.

Wednesdays at 12:15 is still important.  But how nice to know that Rotary has opportunities 24/7 to commit to “service above self.”
